Soccer star Diego Ferareso underwent bloodless surgery of "sports hernia" at "Vita" Hospital

18.07.2013

Usually recurrences in the old "standard" operations reach 10-15%, which makes them less effective. So in "Vita Hernia Center" along with conventional surgical techniques are fully applied laparoscopic (bloodless) methods, following the standard implemented by the European Hernia Association (European Hernia Society - EHS), whose member is Dr. Toushev. Laparoscopic method of operation allows fast, painless and easy recovery of patients with minimal pain and trauma, and an excellent cosmetic result.

Due to the specifics of the profession and level of physical activity, typical for it the so-called "sports hernia" is a damage in the groin, which is relatively rare and is typical for active athletes, including Diego Ferareso.

This condition is described for the first time in 1980 from London surgeon Jerry Gilmore, who developed an operational technique named after his name. The term "damage to the groin" is suitable because formally speaking in this case there is actually no real hernia.

Damage is characterized by chronic pain in the groin in athletes and expansion of the outer opening of the inguinal canal. Most commonly seen in football, hockey and rugby players and can develop also by both amateur athletes as well as professional athletes. Upon physical examination and imaging studies the existence of hernia is not detected as it is not detected during the operational correction of the status. The term "hernia" in this case is used incorrectly, but remained in the literature as "sports hernia" as it is related to surgical reconstruction, similar to inguinal hernia repair.

Symptoms of "sports hernia" are associated with the occurrence of pain in sports and movement, especially in the hip extension, twisting and turning. Pain usually radiatiates to the testes and adductors, but it is often difficult for the patient to specify the exact location of the pain.

After exercising the affected athlete usually feels numbness and pain. Every effort leading to increased abdominal pressure, such coughing, sneezing or sports activity can trigger the onset of pain. At the beginning the persons concerned are able to continue to exercise, but by the time symptoms progressively increase.

Interview

  1. Mr. Ferareso, when did you have a problem and what were the first symptoms that you noticed?

Diego Ferareso: The first symptoms appeared a year and a half ago. I started feeling pain and burning down low, which gradually intensified. With time the adductor pain also intensified, while at one point it started to interfere with my performance because I could not play properly.

  1. Is this problem of "sports hernia" common among players? Do you know your colleagues with the same problem as yours?

Diego Ferareso: The phenomenon of "sports hernia" is certainly very common among players. I know both former and current colleagues with a similar problem.

  1. Have you taken any steps to treat your condition before coming to the hospital for surgery, and if so - what?

Diego Ferareso: So far I have been only treated with medication and injections for pain relief. Unfortunately, however, besides irritating the stomach, these tools do not help to cure the hernia.

  1. What made you decide to undergo surgery?

Diego Ferareso: Over time it became more and more difficult to deal with the pain, and as I mentioned already, this inconvenience hindered my game. That is why I decided it was high time for surgery to correct the problem once and for all.

  1. Why did you choose to trust "Vita Hernia Center" and the team of Dr. Tushev?

Diego Ferareso: I was told about "Vita Hernia Center" by my relatives who have been treated for other diseases by other specialists at the hospital, and were very happy with the service and conditions. It is one of the specialists at the hospital that recommend Dr. Tushev for hernia surgery.
